Aaron fussed with his drink, spinning the ice around the perimeter of the glass as he tried to portray a sense of authority in front of his employees.
Whereas, in reality, all he wanted to do was find a dark, secluded place to stretch out on his stomach with an ice pack to soothe his throbbing, heated ass. Nathan hadnât let the fact that they were away from the apartment deter him from dispensing his punishment.
It wasnât as bad as the wooden paddle Nathan normally used, but Nathanâs hand had done a number on him.
âHow are you doing?â Nathan asked as he wrapped his arm around Aaronâs waist.
âI donât know how Iâm going to sit through dinner.â
âYou shouldâve thought of that before you misbehaved.â
âI know. It wonât happen again.â Aaron clapped his hands together. âHey, thereâs Gary.â He smiled warmly, then strode off across the room to take Garyâs outstretched hand. âI didnât realize you were in the office. Everyone was starting to wonder when you were coming back.â
âI was showing Daniel around.â Gary stepped aside, letting Daniel move up beside him. âAaron, this is myââ
âPartner,â Daniel interjected and looked at Gary for approval.
Gary smiled, then nodded and set his hand on Danielâs shoulder.
âThis is my partner, Daniel.â
âOh, âŚitâs um âŚnice to meet you.â Aaron furrowed his brow as he shook Danielâs hand. Nathan gripped the back of his neck. âSorry.â He stepped aside to let Nathan through. âNathan, this is my star accountant, Gary, Iâve been telling you about. And thisâŚ.â He touched Danielâs elbow lightly. âIs his partner, Daniel.â
âOhââ Nathan said, shaking both their hands. âItâs a pleasure to finally meet you âŚboth.â He tapped nervously at his leg as he looked around the room. âIâm going to check on everyoneâs drinks and get one for myself. Would you care to join me, Daniel?â
âUm, sureââ Daniel brushed his hand down Garyâs arm and passed him his satchel. âIâll be back in a second, hun. Should I grab you a gin and tonic while Iâm up there?â
âThat would be great, thanks.â Gary hooked Danielâs hand as he turned to leave. âHey. Thank you for coming tonight. It means a lot to me.â
âFrom here on in, itâs just you and me, all right?â Daniel moved to follow Nathan, but Gary caught his waist and pulled him back for a quick kiss on the lips.
âI love you, you know?â Gary said.
âI know âŚI love you too, but âŚâ Daniel looked around at the faces staring at them. âYouâre making people uncomfortable.â He tipped his head. âThey donât know youâre gay, do they?â
âThey know now,â Aaron said, searching the room. His business partner Phil hadnât arrived yet.
âGary?â A voice behind Gary spoke. âWhat the hell?â
Daniel peered over Garyâs shoulder. âBaby, Iâm going to head over to the bar with Nathan. With everything thatâs happened today, I donât think Iâm up to meeting one of your fuck buddies right now.â He kissed Garyâs cheek as he eyed up who had spoken.
âWho the fuck is he?â Peter asked, pointing at Daniel, who hadnât managed to make his escape to the bar with Nathan quite yet. Peterâs eyes were moist, and his breathing rapid as he spoke. âYou said you werenât seeing anyone.â
âI wasnât.â Gary attempted to usher Peter down the hall for some privacy, but Peter wouldnât budge. Instead, his voice became louder, silencing everyone else in the room.
âThen who the fuck is he?â Peter asked again.
âI told you my life was complicated.â Gary glanced around. Everyone was listening, and Aaronâs face had taken on an uncharacteristic crimson hue. He was pissed.
âYouâve only been in town for two weeks.â Peter continued. âWhere did you find him? Some pretentious gay bar downtown.â
âPeter, I didnât just pick him up. Iâve known Daniel since high school. Weâve been roommates for years.â
âThatâs Daniel? The guy you were talking to on the phone?â Peter swallowed. âHe moved here with you?â Gasping, he ran a hand across his face. âWhy didnât you tell me about him?â
He stopped, anger suddenly etching lines in his face. âHave you been fucking him the whole time youâve been fucking me?â
A collective intake of breath preceded the disbursement of their co-workers, who were now pretending they hadnât been listening.
Gary grasped Peterâs shoulders, imploring him to calm down. He lowered his voice to barely a whisper. âPeter, please... it wasnât like that. You know it wasnât.â
Peter wrenched his body out of Garyâs grip. âHow do I know that? I told you how I felt about you today. You knew I was falling in love with you âŚand you didnât think to mention himââ His eyes darted over Danielâs features, and his face contorted. âFuck âŚI canât compete with that.â
âThis isnât a competition, Peter,â Daniel said. âIâm sure the three of us can work something out.â
Gary spun around to face Daniel. âWhat?â
âOh, no, no âŚwhoa there, guys!â Aaron said, approaching at an extreme pace. âYou need to take this discussion somewhere else. Preferably far away from this office.â
Nathan placed his hand on Aaronâs shoulder. âAaronâs right. Itâs time for you all to leave. Now. Please. Weâll do dinner another time.â
